Why Travel Insurance Isn’t Optional: A Real Story From Our European Christmas Journey

Travel is meant to be magical especially when you’re exploring Europe during the holidays, cruising down the Danube, and wandering through Christmas markets that feel straight out of a fairytale.
But sometimes, even the most perfectly planned luxury itinerary can take an unexpected turn.
And that’s exactly why travel insurance is not a luxury it’s a necessity.
A Christmas Trip That Changed Everything
In 2025, my husband and I embarked on what was supposed to be a dream journey: a Christmas river cruise along the Danube, extended with land visits to some of Europe’s most iconic cities Paris, Amsterdam, Cologne, Frankfurt, Berlin, Prague and end in Istanbul.
But life had other plans.
After Cologne, we had to cancel Frankfurt because my husband became ill. We went straight to Berlin.
While in Berlin, his condition worsened rapidly. A doctor was called to our hotel and within minutes, everything escalated. His oxygen level was dangerously low (27), and he was rushed to the hospital.
He was admitted straight into the ICU.
28 Days in a Foreign Hospital
The diagnosis:
Severe pneumonia
Collapsed lung
But that wasn’t all.
Despite extensive testing, doctors couldn’t identify a specific cause. During his ICU stay, one of his kidneys became compromised as well.
He spent:
14 days in ICU
14 additional days in a regular hospital room
That’s 28 days hospitalized in a foreign country. No one prepares you for this and to make it worse this is the Holiday season.
Even after discharge, we couldn’t leave. He wasn’t cleared to fly. We remained in Berlin for another week until doctors finally gave him the approval to return home.
Here’s the Reality Most Travelers Don’t Think About
This didn’t start with warning signs. There were no clear symptoms before the trip. No“we should postpone” moment.
It just… happened.
And this is what I want every traveler especially my luxury clients to understand:
👉 Accidents and severe illnesses don’t give notice.
👉 They don’t care how healthy you are.
👉 They don’t care how wellvplanned your trip is.
The Role Travel Insurance Plays (And Why It Matters)
Now imagine going through all of this without travel insurance.
ICU stays in Europe can cost tens of thousands of dollars
Emergency medical care abroad often requires upfront payment
Extended hotel stays, rebooking flights, and logistics add up quickly
Medical evacuation (if needed) can exceed $100,000+
Travel insurance protects you from turning a crisis into a financial disaster.
It covers things like:
Emergency medical expenses
Hospital stays and treatments
Trip interruption or cancellation
Emergency transportation
• Extended accommodations due to medical issues

Travel Tips You Should Never Ignore
After living through this experience, here are my top recommendations:
1. Always get travel insurance—no exceptions.Even for short trips. Even for domestic travel.
2. Don’t choose the cheapest policy—choose the right one.Coverage matters more than price.
3. Understand what your policy includes.Medical coverage, evacuation, trip interruption—these are essential.
5. Keep digital and printed copies of documents.Insurance, passports, medical info—everything.
6. Work with a travel advisor (like me 😉).When things go wrong, you want someone in your corner handling logistics.
